On this day, 14 December 1951, Jewish bagel bakers in New York City went on strike, shutting 32 out of 34 of the city’s bagel bakeries. It left shelves bare and almost entirely cut off the weekly supply of 1.2 million bagels to the city, causing what the New York Times described as a “bagel famine”. The bakers came to agreement with the employers in January, and bagel drivers remained out until seven weeks after the start of the dispute, when they reached a deal to compensate them for wages lost during the strike.
Happy Hanukkah everyone!

A Forest Grown Future for Pennsylvania’s Precious Ginseng -

plantyhamchuk:

“Historically, Mountain Rose Herbs avoided carrying wild-harvested North American ginseng due to the pressures put on this plant in the wild—overharvesting, natural resource extraction, and deforestation due to land development, just to name a few. However, Randy and Cliff’s forest farming methods bypass these perils to the plant, allowing us to offer ginseng that is of the highest quality and that is harvested in a way that doesn’t damage the environment or compromise our wild plant populations. These efforts and specialized farming practices allow us to offer our customers the stress response support of adaptogenic American Ginseng* from a fully traceable and transparent source.

“Mountain Rose Herbs has a commitment to these plants and really cares about the conservation of those botanicals harvested in the wild,” said Susan, executive director of the nonprofit United Plant Savers.

Forest farmers are still a rarity, due largely to one unavoidable barrier to entry: time. Since these botanicals mature slowly and cannot be harvested until years after the first planting, getting started requires considerable work and patience before rewards are realized.“

“Forest farming represents a promising economic and ecological path forward for Pennsylvania’s wild areas, and businesses and herb-lovers are essential to supporting it. When customers purchase Forest Grown Verified botanicals from Mountain Rose Herbs, a portion of the proceeds are donated to United Plant Savers to fund growth and development initiatives to help this emerging industry thrive. With their help, the tireless efforts of our growers, and the global herbalism community, these magical plants may enrich our lives and the environment for generations to come. “

11.27.20. Los Angeles

LASD spent the night before thanksgiving forcibly removing a family from a state-owned home. Police arrived with military gear to remove a family who had been squatting in the vacant home. Protesters at the eviction were unable to stop the police, but they have been begun protesting outside Mayor Garcetti’s home.

A reminder that in nearly every US city, the “housing crisis” is artificially produced through collaboration among real estate developers, landlords, and Democrat & Republican politicians, carried out by overfunded police. There is no scarcity, so capitalists create an illusion of it.

The Its Going Down podcast talked about this over the weekend and they did an interview with one of the organizers who have been trying to get the state of California to give these houses to houseless families for months with no luck. They got tired of dealing with the bureaucracy and waiting on the state to work with them because shit is getting more and more dire due to Covid so they organized a way to help families squat in these houses. They only got to stay in them for a couple days before this happened but luckily the community showed the fuck up to do what they could to stop the police from doing this. They almost won after running off the state troopers the first time, but they came back with LAPD in riot gear and then this happened. The community lost this battle but they aren’t done fighting. They aren’t gonna give up and these families will receive the mutual aid they need.

Do not punish the behaviour you want to see

ingridverse:

I mean, it seems pretty obvious when you put it like that, right?

But how many families, when an introvert sibling or child makes an effort to socialize,  snarkily say, “So, you’ve decided to join us”?

Or when someone does something they’ve had trouble doing, say, “Why can’t you do that all the time?” (Happened to me, too often.)

Or any sentence containing the word “finally”.

If someone makes a step, a small step, in a direction you want to encourage, encourage it. Don’t complain about how it’s not enough. Don’t bring up previous stuff. Encourage it.

Because I swear to fucking god there is nothing more soul-killing, more motivation-crushing, than struggling to succeed and finding out that success and failure are both punished.
