On this day, 30 January 1962, US general Edward Lansdale presented a plan for Operation Bounty at the Pentagon, under which the CIA would offer rewards of up to $1 million to anyone who murdered Cuban communists. Lansdale stated the aim was “to provice inducement to Cuban citizens to overthrow the Cuban Communist Regime; to put pressure on Cuban Communists by creating distrust and disunity”. Different rewards were proposed for murdering different types of people: $5000-$20,000 for an informant, nearly $100,000 for a foreign communist in Cuba, and even more for a member of the government. While the plan was never enacted, several other operations were initiated in unsuccessful attempts to assassinate President Fidel Castro.
