Anti-vaxxer mother and daughter die from Covid in Belfast hospital -

An anti-vaxxer mother and her daughter died just days apart in a Belfast hospital after they contracted Covid-19, leaving their family “devastated”.

The BBC reported that Sammie-Jo Forde, 32, died in the Ulster hospital on Saturday, where she had been treated on the same ward as her mother, Heather Maddern, 55, who died on 31 August.

Maddern had shared a number of Covid conspiracy theories before her death, MailOnline reported, as well as a post about nurses facing dismissal if they refused the jab. She also shared videos from Candace Owens, a conservative commentator and activist from the US, on how to respond if your employer forces you to be vaccinated, and another from a woman arguing against children being jabbed.

Forde and Maddern were both care workers and would have been among the first groups eligible for a jab when the vaccine programme started in January.

Forde’s father, Kevin McAllister, told the BBC’s Nolan Show: “This has just shattered my world. I’ve lost my daughter, my best friend.” He said Forde, who had four children, and Maddern were “very, very close”. “They worked together, they lived together and they died together,” he said.  …

…  He said he did not know why his daughter and his former partner had not taken up the offer of the vaccine. “These people who are not taking the Covid-19 injection – they’re not thinking of the other people that they leave behind,” he said.  …

(via Alberta reverses hands-off approach to Covid to tackle ‘crisis of unvaccinated’ | Canada | The Guardian)

Alberta’s premier has announced sweeping new restrictions to combat the spread of the coronavirus, admitting the Canadian province was gripped by a “crisis of the unvaccinated”.

The new measures marked a major reversal from Jason Kenney’s hands-off approach to the pandemic previously, and come amid warnings from frontline medical workers that the province’s healthcare system is on the verge of collapse.

Kenney admitted as much when he outlined the province’s new restrictions, telling the public that Alberta may run out of intensive-care beds and staff to care for ICU patients within 10 days.

Alberta currently has the worst coronavirus outbreak in Canada.

Kenney, whose government consists of moderate and far-right conservatives, has previously resisted vaccine passport systems, citing privacy concerns. But on Wednesday evening, he admitted he had little choice.

“The government’s first obligation must be to avoid large numbers of preventable deaths. We must deal with the reality that we are facing. We cannot wish it away,” he said. “Morally, ethically and legally, the protection of life must be our paramount concern.”

Beginning late this month, Albertans must show proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test for restaurants, bars and indoor organized events. Businesses that choose not to ask for vaccination status will have a separate, more strict set of regulations they must follow. For example, if restaurants opt out of the vaccine passport system, they must close their indoor dining rooms and limit outdoor service to tables of six people, all of whom must be from the same household.

“No one will be compelled to get vaccinated against their wishes, and a negative test option will be offered as an alternative,” Kenney said. “But with unvaccinated patients overwhelming our hospitals, this is now the only responsible choice that we have.”

The rules apply to anyone above the age of 12.  …

‘About damn time’: First Nation gets clean water after 24-year wait -

Residents of Shoal Lake 40 can drink from taps thanks to a new water treatment facility but dozens of communities lack access

Residents of a First Nations community in Canada, who were deprived of clean drinking water for nearly a quarter of a century, can now drink from their taps after a water treatment facility became fully operational earlier this week.

Shoal Lake 40, a community on the Manitoba-Ontario border, has been under drinking water advisory since 1997.

On Wednesday, residents celebrated the opening of the community’s C$33m (US$26m) water treatment facility.

“It’s unbelievable – and it’s also about damn time,” Vernon Redsky, chief of Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, told reporters.

Until recently, the only way to get in or out of the community was across the lake on a summer barge or winter road, making it too expensive to haul in construction material to build a water treatment plant. Plans for a treatment plant were scrapped in 2011 after the federal government balked at the price tag.  …

…  “It’s the end of years of struggles trying to get the basic necessities of life, clean drinking water,” resident Angelina McLeod told the Canadian Press.Shoal Lake 40’s inability to access clean drinking water has been one of the longest-running crises in the country – and a source of shame for the federal government, a minister admitted on Wednesday.

“This is not a victory of the federal government, this is a victory of the community,” Marc Miller, the country’s Indigenous services minister, said at the event.

For generations Canada has been unwilling to guarantee access to clean water for Indigenous peoples, and supplies in dozens of communities are considered unsafe to drink.

“It’s unacceptable in a country that is financially one of the most wealthy in the world, and water rich, and the reality is that many communities don’t have access to clean water,” Miller told the Guardian in an interview earlier this year.  …

Joy Reid angers Republicans for calling them a "creepy little COVID-loving death cult" | Boing Boing -

merelygifted:

“…It all helps to explain why governor Gavin Newsom beat the recall effort, and by a lot, winning support from more than 60% of the electorate. According to exit polls, the most important issue for voters was the Coronavirus. And when asked about the governor’s job on COVID, 65% said his policies were about right or not strict enough. So, Republicans, your thirst for COVID is why you lost. Nobody likes your policies that threaten our safety and our kids. You, you may want COVID you may want to ingest horse dewormer and attend far too many funerals. But we, we don’t. And instead of just saying that, or tweeting that, or fighting about that, California voted that. It is perhaps the first real tangible proof that your criminal COVID-loving death cult ways are not going to work for you at the ballot box next year. In fact, it’s political suicide. And also apparently talk radio suicide because your brilliant little COVID plan is killing your right wing hosts. The majority of us Americans want things like, I don’t know, better infrastructure, good schools, gun reforms, jobs, and the right to vote. You know what else we want? We want to live not die from COVID.”

ICUs full of COVID-19 patients forced into leaving people with treatable conditions to die | Boing Boing -

merelygifted:

Across the United States, hospitals are overflowing with COVID-19 patients. Many, if not most to nearly all, of these folks refused a vaccine that would almost certainly have kept them home to recover, if not prevented the infection in the first place. Worse than these people becoming sick, and or dying, is the fact that their life-saving treatment is keeping others from using the hospital, often to terrible effect.  …
