workingclasshistory:

On this day, 18 March 1871, the Paris commune, one of the most significant early attempts at a working class uprising to create socialism, was established. The workers of Paris, joined by mutinous national guardsmen, seized the city and set about re-organising a society based on workers’ councils. The communards were able to hold the city until late May when, upon retaking the city, troops massacred up to 30,000 workers in bloody revenge.
