On this day, 24 December 1920, biracial lesbian and gay rights icon Stormé DeLarverie was born in New Orleans. She is credited by some as sparking the Stonewall riots, as according to some eyewitnesses and her own account she was the “New York butch” who was arrested and attacked by police. Bleeding from a head wound, the lesbian began to fight back and called to the crowd “Why don’t you guys do something?” When she was thrown into a police van the crowd erupted and the Stonewall rebellion began.
Some people dispute this and believe it was more likely to be Marilyn Fowler, the only lesbian with an arrest record for that night.
As well as working as an MC, bouncer and bodyguard, DeLarverie carried a gun and patrolled the streets of the Village, protecting other lesbians from street harassment or assault, and also raised money for survivors of domestic violence.
More info in our podcast episodes 25-26 about the Stonewall riots, with participants: https://workingclasshistory.com/2019/05/13/e21-22-the-stonewall-riots-and-pride-at-50/ https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.294735704044920/1883403231844818/?type=3

Blockchain company BurntBanksy recently bought a $95,000 Banksy artwork, just to set it on fire! The goal was to take art in the physical world and bring in into the digital world as something called an NFT (non-fungible token).

The company stated “We view this burning event as an expression of art itself, and we specifically chose a Banksy piece since he has previously shredded one of his own artworks at an auction.”

The company is selling the piece on an NFT website called OpenSea, where the current offer is on 2 ETH ($7,357).

deftly turning 95 grand into 7 like any crypto scheme worth it’s salt

love that it happened to a banksy piece too! clown on clown violence

Casual reminder, they did not “bring it into the digital world”. An NFT is not an image. An NFT is a receipt on the blockchain, that attributes ownership of that image to a specific person. They minted an NFT out of an image of the painting, and then they destroyed the painting. That’s the story. The painting no longer exists.

IMPORTANT: While Christmas-related, these are still horror films. Thus, these films may contain:

As I have not seen all of them, I cannot attest to the quality of each and every one, nor all potentially triggering/upsetting content. However, where I can, I will add warnings for certain situations (such as sexual assault), and I will add one of these four ratings:
