L7: Pretend We’re Dead (2016, Sarah Price)
One of the best slashers of the 80s, it sadly never received the attention it deserved beyond cult status. It was a bit darker, meaner, and more serious than many of its peers. It also never spawned the typical franchise of the time. Regardless it ranks with the genre classics.
1987’s Stagefright/Aquarius is one of the strangest slashers ever made. It’s Italian origin combines the giallo roots of the genre with a surreal and campy, yet gory 80s aesthetic. It’s one of my favorite lesser known cult films. Musical theater meets new wave meets elaborate dismemberment.
