I came to this same conclusion at work, though in a different way.
I work at a frame shop, and a lot of our customers are elderly. I can’t tell you how many times someone will bring in a gorgeous painting, I’ll ask who the artist is, and they’ll reply,
“Oh, I painted this.”
“Really!” I say. “When did you start painting?”
“About three months ago. I picked it up after I retired.”
Many of them were never artists before retirement, but with the free time they take up new hobbies and are heckin great.
Dorothy Sayers explores this phenomenon in her book The Mind of the Maker. She posits that the human creator (artists, writers, etc) goes about a similar thought process to God, and so can understand him in a unique way. It makes sense that, being made in the image of the Creator, we all have an innate desire to create.
