And me stood there with anxiety just like “please leave please leave please leave”
Fun story! Early in the first lockdown I needed to get some groceries. Store managers were still worried more about dying than losing money, so enforcement was tight and everyone in the store was wearing masks. Not properly, mind you, but masks. As I was looking at meat and wondering why anyone would buy chocolate-flavoured bone broth, I saw an elderly woman pull her mask down, lick her entire goddamn hand, and reach into the cooler and grab a frozen chicken.
There’s nothing more to this anecdote. The moment just stuck with me, like a particularly nasty bit from a fever dream. And now I’m sharing it with you.

During my brief cashiering job a woman handed me a stack of coupons that she’d apparently been holding in her mouth, which was… a major contributing factor in me changing jobs
