I have noticed that many people, probably myself included, swing towards melancholy as a baseline mood. Unless there’s an almost constant stream of positive news to buoy one’s spirits, the mind tends to drift towards darkness. We expect the worst, so we look for it, and we find it, whether it’s there or not.
