This is a horrific article that has at its core the assumption that one can be a genuine socialist and at once tow the line of NATO and the US government and its nationalist, warmongering propaganda. It is an attack on the notion of socialist internationalism and on having our own independent analyses apart from the views of the imperialist bourgeoisie in our own country.
It is pure, unfettered opportunism.
Once a term used in very niche contexts in themselves very silly intra-left debates, “tankie” at this point is a completely meaningless word that stands to smear socialists and others who stand against the drive to war.
We shouldn’t let this shit fool us or make us change our analysis or our demands just because it makes people like this angry. Internationalism often makes people angry, especially in a war hysteria, where the capitalist government and media are whipping people up into a frenzy and getting them mentally and ideologically prepared for conflict with the “enemy” of the day.
We are NOT confused! We do not “support” Putin or his invasion of Ukraine. We know that this is a conflict driven by imperialism and capitalism and that we have a duty to oppose the militarism of our own governments and demand and fight for real peace which can only be accomplished by the demilitarization of Europe which can only be accomplished by abolishing NATO.
Abolish NATO! No intervention, no sanctions, no more arms shipments, no more fuel to the fire, we demand peace talks! Not escalation and more war in an already absurd situation where workers are killing workers and innocent people die every moment and whose escalation stands the very real chance of destroying our world.
