Victorian-era illustration of a vampire bat, from an advertisement in the back of a British novel from 1890. It’s for a scientific book for children, but the illustration for some reason is a maniacal, teeth-baring close-up of the bat’s face. I guess maybe there’s always been a little sensationalism used to get children to read books about animals and science. Gorgeous illustration, really.
