“Men do not care how nobly they live, but only how long, although it is within the reach of every man to live nobly, but within no manโ€™s power to live long.” — Seneca, Moral Letters to Lucilius

Meet the black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas)! This canid lives in Africa, where it prefers arid and open terrain. Populations of this jackal can be found in eastern and southern regions of the continent, including Kenya, Somalia, Botswana, and South Africa. To take down large prey, like an impala, it works with a pack to single out a target from its herd and take turns tiring it out before taking it down. It also hunts alone or in pairs to pounce on smaller prey such as rodents and lizards. It’s not above scavenging, either. Upon finding a big carcass, it might save bits of meat for a later meal by burying pieces throughout its range.

Mastodonsaurus giganteus’ face says it all–which is why we’re featuring it for #WorldEmojiDay.😐

Mastodonsaurus is an extinct relative of frogs and salamanders, but it probably behaved more like a crocodile. The large, flat skull with tusk-like teeth, some of which protruded through the skull, seems to be adapted for seizing large prey. It lived during the Late Triassic about 215 million years ago. See this life-size model of Mastondonsaurus giganteus in the Museum’s Hall of Vertebrate Origins.

What’s the purpose of the sacs of the lesser sac-winged bat (Saccopteryx leptura)?🦇

The sacs on its wings are scent glands, which are used to mark territory and help individuals identify others of its own species! Studies have shown that females recognize and prefer scents that come from a male of the same species over the scent of a male from a closely related species. The winged mammal lives in forests in parts of Central and South America, where it awakens from its roost during the last hours of the day and remains active into the night, when it looks for moths and other small insects to munch on.
