The skull of an African Wolf (Canis lupus lupaster) on the left compared with a Golden Jackal (Canis aureus) on the right. 

Until very recently it was believed that C. l. lupaster was a subspecies of the golden jackal but mtDNA tests proved them to be an ancient lineage of the grey wolf.
