The French Republican calendar, also known as the French Revolutionary calendar, was created during the French Revolution (1789-1799) in an attempt to build a new society separate from the vestiges of the Ancien Régime. First implemented in 1793, the calendar remained in use for twelve years until 1806 and was revived for 18 days during the Paris Commune of 1871.
The Republican calendar was designed to remove all royalist and Christian elements from the French calendar, which were replaced by natural and agricultural motifs. This is apparent in the poetic names of the months, derived from the most prominent characteristic of each month. For example, the month of Thermidor, which lasted from mid-July to mid-August in the Gregorian calendar, was derived from the Greek word thermon or “summer heat.” The calendar is also notable for its use of decimal time. Each week consisted of ten days, and each day consisted of ten hours. An hour was made up of 100 decimal minutes, which were in turn divided into 100 decimal seconds.
Americans, vote like your life depends on it because if this bill passes it literally will. They’re straight up trying to make it legal to arrest people for existing as LGBT.
If any of your sneering people think “Oh, it’s just the transsexuals; no one cares”, I guarantee you that once they strip rights from us, they’ll just move on up to the next group on the hierarchy, because that is and always has been how fascism works.
The bill being discussed here is H.R.9197 and it goes farther than is being described. This bill isn’t a prelude, it in and of itself tries to, effectively, ban “sexual material” from being viewed by someone under the age of 10. “sexual material” which it defines as anything pertaining to”Any depiction, description, or simulation of sexual
activity, any lewd or lascivious depiction or description of human genitals, or
any topic involving gender identity, gender dysphoria, transgenderism, sexual
orientation or related subjects“. This is an outright assault on all of us in the LGBT community and beyond that would ban us from existing in spaces where children would be expected to be present, or attempting to teach children that we exist so they don’t suffer like many of us did and don’t cause others to suffer.
Do not undersell the seriousness of this bill.
Imagine how this would be used to prevent people from communicating with children in a way that could help the children confirm that they have been sexually harmed by someone.
Imagine how this would be used to prevent children from getting to know their own bodies in healthy and respectful ways so that they could make skillful choices for their own well being.
Imagine how this would be used to gag anybody who could possibly help a child who is being abused and prevent help from ever getting to children whose parents perform indoctrination of intolerance and hate for the first 18 years of a human’s life.
We grown ups are in danger, yes. But the goal could might be to isolate children from any diversity and keep them locked in step with their authoritarian designs.
On this day, 26 October 1881, communist Indigenous activist Dolores Cacuango was born in Ecuador to a family of poor hacienda workers. She ran away from her family to Quito, where she got a job as a maid, learned Spanish and gradually became radicalised. Cacuango moved back to her home town to help organise with the working class to improve their conditions. A liberal revolution took place in 1916, which claimed it would give back land stolen from Indigenous peoples by big landowners and the Church. But the promises of the new government were largely unmet, and poor campesinos continued to be largely landless and ruthlessly exploited. Cacuango took part in the landless and Indigenous movements, and strongly advocated for women’s rights and campaigned against the endemic sexual abuse of Indigenous women by hacienda bosses, becoming famed for her fiery speeches in Spanish and Kichwa.
