On this day, 26 December 1943, in response to the arrest of two partisans, Mario Fiorentini (pictured), along with a number of comrades who were providing cover, cycled to the Regina Coeli prison in Rome during the changing of the guard. As he got close, he threw two kilos of TNT at the SS officers who were guarding the gates, killing eight (five of them instantly). Guards at the prison opened fire, but were unable to hit him as he quickly pedalled away to safety.
