El 2 de mayo de 1808 en Madrid (1814) by Francisco Goya depicts the Spanish rebellion against the French occupation under Napoleon.
The painting was commissioned by the governing council of Spain in 1814, after the expulsion of Napoleon’s army. Goya’s depiction of ordinary citizens, using crude weapons, to repel the attacking French Imperial Guard, did not please the commission and the painting was not publicly displayed until many years later.
The painting was badly damaged during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, as the truck trying to carry the artwork to safety crashed.
