On this day, 1 January 1994 the Zapatista uprising began, when Indigenous peoples in Chiapas, Mexico rose up and took control of their communities, redistributing power and organising new, directly democratic ways of running society. Despite state repression, violence and massacres, their movement of around 300,000 people remains self managed to this day.
