workingclasshistory:

On this day, 23 July 1967, one of the biggest rebellions in US history occurred in Detroit, following a police raid on a bar in a poor, African-American majority area in the early hours of the morning. Black and white residents fought police in the streets, looted goods and snipers took potshots at officers from windows. It ended with over 40 deaths, over 7000 arrests and over 2000 buildings destroyed.
In the wake of the uprising, many radical black workers began organising in their workplaces, where they realised they had more power. Some of them formed the League of Revolutionary Black Workers, whose story we tell in our podcast: https://workingclasshistory.com/2018/08/28/e12-the-league-of-revolutionary-black-workers-in-detroit/ https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1173030116215470/?type=3
