White supremacist in army reserve -
The man who is recruiting in Winnipeg for a neo-Nazi paramilitary group holds a leadership position in the Canadian Army Reserve and is a trained explosives expert.
The Free Press has identified Master Cpl. Patrik Mathews, 26, as the man responsible for the neo-Nazi propaganda posters that have been posted throughout the city in recent weeks.
The posters were part of a recruitment drive for The Base, a white supremacist network that’s active on three continents. Experts on hate groups say The Base represents the most radical, violent fringes of the extremist right.
Mathews is a trained combat engineer, which makes him an explosives expert, and is an active member of the army reserve. Combat engineers are responsible for conducting a number of construction and demolition tasks under battle conditions.
As a master corporal, he is considered to be in a leadership position and oversees and instructs privates who work under him.

Holy shit, if he’s a reserve army combat engineer in Winnipeg, then my brother-in-law, who is 1) the child of Chinese immigrants and 2) a trans man, literally serves in his unit. I bet he could tell some fucked up stories about this guy. :/ has he been dismissed from the armed forces yet? (Will read article later, am currently heading in to work)
This is the Army’s response:
“While we cannot discuss any specific cases or investigations, we can say that we take these matters seriously. Hateful conduct, be it through words or actions, is completely incompatible with (Canadian Armed Forces) values and culture,” a military spokeswoman said in a written statement.
“Any form of hateful conduct erodes cohesion and esprit de corps, and diminishes our authority as a force for good in Canadian society and around the world. We will not tolerate it in any form.”
I know where their base is and I am marching the fuck down there to ask. I have three days off starting tomorrow and they are gonna hear from me.
We were (are?) paying this asshole’s fucking salary. This is not okay. I thought the military still had SOME fucking standards, and apparently I was wrong. :|

ِِAnimals in ancient Egypt
In ancient Egypt, animals were symbolic of human virtues. The frog symbolizes fertility and safe childbirth, while the monkey represents status and wealth. A hedgehog stands for resurrection.

- Somebody ‘Fixin’ to be Killed’: A Review of We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement
- By Jamala Rogers, The Black Commentator
- In We Will Shoot Back, Akinyele Umoja goes further than dispelling a long held myth that black Mississippians were too paralyzed in fear to defend themselves and actively participate in the freedom struggle. And that the omnipotent Klu Klux Klan kept the black community in check. He confronts head-on the stereotype that black southerners were docile, head-hanging, cheek-turning second class citizens.
- Umoja takes the reader to the time when black Mississippians were forced to embrace armed resistance for their own survival; blacks faced the realization that their government offered no pretense of protection and could not be relied upon. In many cases, local government officials, along with law enforcement, were part of the same white mobs terrorizing black communities. Umoja chronicles the inextricable and critical role of armed resistance in the advancement of the southern freedom strategy that ultimately led to the passage of the historic Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965. Boycotts and armed resistance were the primary means of effectively organizing for change during this period.
Umoja documents a sophisticated labyrinth of disciplined, well-organized communication networks, safe houses, haven towns and armed residents who, much to the chagrin of local authorities, used local gun laws to their advantage. The special expertise of Vietnam veterans was also tapped.

Economist: Hong Kong's tycoons 'are the problem' underlying recent unrest -
Social discontent with stratospheric housing prices is playing a major part in the unrest, Andy Xie, an independent economist, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box”on Wednesday.
“Hong Kong has been a pressure cooker for a long time,” he said.
According to the Centa-City Leading Index, a widely used indicator of the city’s residential price trends, property prices have appreciated over 300% since 2003 when they tanked due to a disease epidemic.
But wages have largely stagnated in the same period, so “it’s very difficult to see how young people can feel hope. They know they’ll never be able to afford a place, so they cannot start a family. How can they get ahead in life? Desperation, and really a deep sense of unhappiness, is driving this unrest,” said Xie.
Last year, global chairty network Oxfam flagged a “particularly severe” wealth disparity in Hong Kong, which it said was the highest among all developed countries and regions.
Hong Kong is the world’s most expensive city to buy a home, according to another report released in April.
Xie attributed the sky-high property price to the housing market being lead by local business leaders.
“The Hong Kong government is not really in charge (even though) most people think that they need to listen to Beijing, but perhaps more importantly, they are really influenced by the big property tycoons,” said Xie.
“The key is that the political structure here is neither the Singapore situation where the government is on top, nor like Taiwan (where) it’s a democracy and people can vote,” said Xie, who recently penned an opinion piece in the South China Morning Post on the subject.
Hong Kong is “in between — just a bunch of business people calling the shots,” he added.
Beijing needs to distance itself from the tycoons in Hong Kong, said Xie.
“Every time, there’s a disturbance in Hong Kong, Beijing goes to these business guys for advice; you know something’s very wrong,” said Xie. “These guys are causing the trouble in Hong Kong, why are you going to them for advice every time?”
