British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has asked Queen Elizabeth II to suspend Parliament, infuriating his political opponents and others who accuse Johnson of circumventing the democratic process. The move would likely allow Johnson to bypass lawmakers and push through a no-deal Brexit.
Within hours of Johnson’s request, the queen agreed to prorogue, or suspend, Parliament for several weeks in September and October.
That’s what Trump ordered of his staff to speed up the construction of the border wall before the 2020 election. Trump also told aides he will pardon them if they face any legal repercussions related to the request, which could including the seizing of private land, expediting billions of dollars of construction contracts and ignoring environmental regulations.
Mussels are notorious maritime stowaways known for damaging the hulls of boats, but these same adhesive properties have widespread engineering applications, scientists in China and the United states write in review published July 10 in the journal Matter. They suggest that the chemistry of mussel threads is inspiring engineering innovations that address a wide range of problems, from cleaning up oil spills to treating contaminated water.
Mussels withstand powerful currents and forceful waves by attaching themselves to rocks using clusters of thin, surprisingly hardy byssus threads. These threads owe their adhesive power to an amino acid group called dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), which clings to the surface by performing a series of molecular gymnastics, including hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions.
Scientists have found that DOPA can adhere to all sorts of solid substrates through these interactions—and so can dopamine, a molecule with a similar structure to DOPA. Research suggesting that dopamine can form a universal coating on a wide range of substrates spurred the growth of mussel-inspired chemistry as a powerful new tool for material surface engineering and environmental science.
Ismail B. Ajjawi, an incoming freshman, was supposed to arrive on the elite-college campus this week. Instead, the Harvard Crimson reports, the 17-year-old Palestinian is trying to resolve his case with Harvard’s lawyers from Lebanon, where he lives with his family.
Ajawi was reportedly detained at Boston Logan International Airport for eight hours, during which he was questioned by immigration officers and forced to hand over his electronics.
While there, he and several other international students were questioned by immigration officers, but all of them were eventually allowed to leave except Ajjawi, who was subjected to additional questioning about his religious practicesin Lebanon.
Ajjawi said an officer told him to unlock his phone and laptop, which were searched for about five hours.
Afterwards, he said, the officers questioned him about posts on his social media feed that were critical of the U.S.
“After the five hours ended, she called me into a room, and she started screaming at me. She said that she found people posting political points of view that oppose the U.S. on my friend[s] list,” Ajjawi told the Crimson.
“I responded that I have no business with such posts and that I didn’t like, [s]hare or comment on them and told her that I shouldn’t be held responsible for what others post,” Ajjawi said. “I have no single post on my timeline discussing politics.”
Every single journalist on Twitter that’s referring to right-wing protestors in Portland right now as “conservative” is both a liar and an active fascist collaborator.
Andy Ngo wants you sympathize with fascists. Andy Ngo is a fascist collaborator.
Here’s Jack Posobiec, self-described “nationalist conservative,” framing the same people as victims, neglecting to mention that they are an openly white nationalist group.
Jack Posobiec wants you to sympathize with fascists. Jack Posobiec is a fascist collaborator.
Here’s Elijah Schaffer, reporter for The Blaze, framing the American Guard as the victims and neglecting to mention that they are a white nationalist group.
Elijah Schaffer wants you to sympathize with fascists. Elijah Schaffer is a fascist collaborator.
This was specifically a fascist and white nationalist rally, and any journalist who doesn’t start their reporting with that is irresponsible at best and an active fascist collaborator at worst.
