On this day, 8 March 1917, thousands of housewives and women workers in St Petersburg, Russia defied union leaders’ appeals for calm and took to the streets against high prices and hunger, thus igniting the February Revolution. The following day, 200,000 workers joined them by striking, shouting slogans against the tsar and the war. Some military units began to join the workers, and by 15 March, tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate. This is a fantastic article about the key role women played in the buildup to the revolution: https://ift.tt/2Hh3cBg https://ift.tt/2HkL6li

Mummy of Ramesses IV

Ramesses IV was the eldest son of Ramesses III. He succeeded his father after having saved the throne from his father’s murders and punished the conspirators but he is considered to have been the first of a series of increasingly weak rulers. Originally, he was buried in tomb (KV2) in the Valley of the Kings, but he was reburied in the tomb of Amenhotep II; his mummy was clumsily rewrapped and labeled by later priests.

The king’s eyes were replaced by artificial ones made of small onions, a unique case in mummification. In addition, each nostril was covered with the skin of an onion; it is possible that onions were used for their well-known antiseptic qualities. New Kingdom, 20th Dynasty, reign of Ramesses IV, ca. 1155-1149 BC. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 34567

On this day, 27 July 1918, Ginger Goodwin was murdered in Cumberland, Canada. A young miner from England, the appalling conditions in the Cumberland mines caused Ginger to become a labour organiser and eventually a prominent leader of the union and socialist movement in British Columbia. As a conscientious objector to WWI, he fled conscription with others by hiding in the mountains, but was hunted down and murdered by an ex-policeman. His death sparked the 1918 Vancouver general strike six days later. Here is a short piece about the important radical edge of Ginger’s politics: http://libcom.org/history/praise-ginger-goodwin-revere-radical-mark-leier https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1175605272624621/?type=3

Trump tweeted this statement earlier this week, which incorrectly included Alabama in the list of states that would be impacted by Hurricane Dorian:

image

This error was quickly addressed by the National Weather Service & the correction was picked up by the news

image

Of course, Trump couldn’t handle being corrected by meteorologists on the fucking weather so:

As someone who took two years of meteorology let me just say that a big concern regards mass panic when issuing weather alerts and warnings. You don’t want people unnecessarily leaving - jamming up the roads or putting themselves at risk (sometimes the safest thing to do is to stay put esp. if the roads are at risk of flooding), you don’t want confusion, and you definitely don’t want people to lose confidence in the weather warnings where they no longer take them seriously. And it doesn’t really help the cause when the fucking president of the country can’t issue a simple correction that HE WAS WRONG because of his fragile fucking ego.

image

Update: this fuckin guy is STILL going on about this

image

Also if you look at this photo it’s literally dated August 2 and Trump’s tweet was sent September 1 so this only further proves he gave out incorrect information after the fact so like… cool?

No words for the victims yet but at least he’s keeping up his beef with the goddamn National Weather Service.

Well if y’all can believe it, this story actually gets even weirder…

So earlier today Trump actually DISPLAYED AN ALTERED MAP IN AN OVAL OFFICE MEETING:

image

You see that line going into Alabama? Well…

President Trump on Wednesday displayed a map that he said reflected Hurricane Dorian’s original path, but the image appeared to be manually altered with a marker to show the storm’s trajectory continuing toward Alabama.

Trump later told reporters that he did not know anything about the changed map, but was adamant that original forecasts called for Alabama to be impacted by the hurricane. (x)
