“Earth Liberation is a Class Issue”
On this day, 6 September 1966, Mozambican-Greek anarchist Dimitri Tsafendas assassinated the architect of apartheid, South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd by stabbing him during a parliamentary session. Tsafendas was at the time working in the Parliament building. Previously a member of the South African Communist Party, anti-apartheid leaders distanced themselves from Tsafendas after the assassination. Found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity, he was instead sent to a secure psychiatric hospital, and not released after the end of apartheid. He died in custody in 1999.
