Photo by @amivitale Lions that were released and collared in a remote region of a 4,500 square kilometer Zambeze Delta area of Mozambique, feast on an antelope. They were part of an ambitious introduction of 24 lions from South Africa, the largest international translocation ever undertaken. It is estimated that that the population could grow to as many as 500 within 15 years, Already, 20 cubs have been born. A hundred years ago, there were over 200,000 wild lions living in Africa. Today, leading researchers estimate the population to be 20,000 or less, with lions now extinct in 26 African countries. Mozambique’s wildlife was decimated by the country’s civil war and subsequent poaching in the last 20 years. This particular ecosystem has made a remarkable recovery except for its lions. This historic translocation might mark the point that the lions reversed their fate in Mozambique. #Wild #Nature #Wildlife #Lion #Lions #Delta #Animals #Igs_Africa #Wildeyesa #Endangered #Mozambique #Zambeze #SouthAfrica

Brazil to Push Forward Mining on Indigenous Land Amid Opposition

image

The Brazilian government is pushing ahead with a controversial bill that allows mining activity on indigenous lands, and it won’t give local communities any veto power, a cabinet member said.

The private sector will naturally refrain from exploring in areas if indigenous groups are against it, Alexandre Vidigal, the mining secretary at the Energy Ministry, said Tuesday in an interview.

“It is obvious that if an indigenous community opposes a certain mining activity, there won’t be a entrepreneur interested in developing it,” he said on the sidelines of an event in Rio de Janeiro. He expects the government will conclude the text of the bill by the end of the month.

Proposals to explore resources on indigenous lands were stalled in Congress in recent years amid strong opposition in and outside of the country, but they have gained renewed momentum under President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration and a business-friendly legislature.

Preschool growing fruits and veggies ordered by city to stop sales

The national farm to school movement has grown so fast that it is challenging traditional notions of city planning, and a Clayton County preschool is at ground zero in the conflict.

The Little Ones Learning Center in Forest Park has a nationally recognized garden-based education program. In 2015, it merited a visit by then-first lady Sandra Deal, who watched the children tasting fresh juice. “It was a treat to see your early learning center practicing good nutrition with a bountiful garden,” she wrote in a letter to the school.

“Anywhere you live, you’ve got to have rules and regulations,” Forest Park City Manager Angela Redding said. “Otherwise, you would just have whatever.”

Redding, the Forest Park city manager, said the farm stand was a safety concern. Parked cars lined the street the day a code enforcement officer shut it down. Okunoren-Meadows still has options. Besides relocating her farm stand to the city property, she can file for a special permit each time she wants to sell. There is a $50 fee that covers any needed police presence or other safety measures, Redding said, adding the city “can work with her” on the cost.

“If we change the ordinance, then that means every person in a residential area could have a farm stand, and we could end up with one on every corner,” Redding said.

That is the core of the disagreement: the old order versus new ways of living.

The cloud vs humanity: Adobe terminates every software license in Venezuela, keeps Venezuelans’ money

mostlysignssomeportents:

If you live in Venezuela and rely on Adobe products to do your job – whether that’s publishing a newspaper, running an NGO, or doing design work, Adobe has a very special message for you: GO FUCK YOURSELF.

Today, citing US sanctions, Adobe terminated every software license in the country of Venezuela. And because Adobe has “pivoted to the cloud,” switching its software to “software as a service,” that means that all the software that some of the most desperate, hard-hit people in the world paid good money for are out in the cold.

They’re not issuing refunds, either.

It’s just part of Adobe’s repudiation of capitalism and the idea of private property – just because you paid for your Adobe products, you don’t actually own them.
