On this day, 12 October 1999, Swedish warehouse worker, rugby fan, revolutionary unionist and anti-fascist Björn Söderberg was murdered by fascists outside his home. Söderberg had tipped off the newspaper of his union, the SAC, that his colleague Robert Vesterlund was a Nazi and board member of a local union. As a result, Vesterlund was expelled from his union and quit his job. Söderberg was then assassinated by two members of the neo-Nazi organisation Nationell Ungdom. After the killing the SAC held demonstrations of tens of thousands of people in 25 towns and cities. The SAC also subsequently designated 12 October as the Day of Civil Courage, and gives an award each year in Söderberg’s memory. His killers and one of their accomplices were later jailed. Vesterlund wasn’t charged in connection with the murder but was imprisoned on separate gun and drug charges.
