The Worlds of Ursula K Le Guin -

neil-gaiman:

If you are somewhere that this link works (primarily UK and Ireland) then do yourself a favour and watch it…

“Vīdī pyramidās sine tē, dulcissime frāter, et tibi, quod potuī, lacrimās hīc maesta profūdi, et nostrī memorem luctūs hanc sculpo querēlam. Sīc nōmen Decimī Gentiānī pyramide altā, pontificis comitisque, Trāiāne, triumphīs, lūstraque sex intrā cēnsōris, cōnsulis exstet.” —

“I saw the pyramids without you, sweetest brother, and here I mournfully poured forth tears for you, as much as I could, and I am engraving this lament preserving the memory of our grief. Thus, Trajan, let the name of Decimus Gentianus––priest, consul, companion to your triumphs and censor for six lustrations––be found on the lofty pyramid.”

– A lament engraved by Tarentia on a stone of the Great Pyramid in Giza for her brother Decimus Terentius Gentianus. 2nd century CE.

workingclasshistory:

On this day, 6 October 1976, the Thammasat University massacre (aka: “the 6 October event” in Thailand) occured when state forces and far-right royalist mobs attacked student protesters after four to five thousand students from various universities had demonstrated for more than a week against the return of former military dictator Thanom Kittikachorn to Thailand from Singapore. After years of workers, peasants and students fighting for democracy, social justice, an end to long-held privileges and even in some cases an end to capitalism itself, the Thai ruling class responded with the utmost brutality and installed a new dictatorship over the mutilated bodies of those struggling for freedom. Dozens of demonstrators were killed, many of them hanged from trees and then beaten with sticks and chairs. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1228088217376326/?type=3
