workingclasshistory:

On this day, 10 September 1922, the Irish Free State faced its first major industrial dispute and responded by declaring the strike illegal and using troops to attack peaceful pickets. The new Postmaster General, J.J. Walsh, was a former postal worker with a reputation as both an active trade unionist and a militant nationalist. But once in power, his first act was to cut wages for postal workers, while pre-emptively preparing to import scab labour from England. At 6pm on September 10th, workers went on strike at the telephone exchange, leaving only two supervisors inside the building. But soldiers forbade them from picketing in the streets. Captain McAllister fired shots towards strikers in Crown Alley and later shot at female operators who had assembled in Anglesea Street. The violence continued the next day, when the military raided the headquarters of the Telephone Strike Committee with armoured cars and machine gun equipment. On 17th September, a sergeant shot at workers as they were walking away through Merchant’s Arch. Olive Flood was shot in the back of the leg, but escaped serious injury because the bullet deflected off her suspender belt. The violent repression was not confined to Dublin; Dolly Ryder was beaten by soldiers in Limerick, and the same troops raided the Strike Committee Offices and destroyed Union property. Despite this repression, the strike held firm, and on 29 September the government agreed to reduce the pay cut. It was a meagre victory earned at great cost, and despite government assurances those who had gone on strike endured years of victimisation. In his memoirs, J.J. Walsh was unapologetic, arguing that “‘at this critical juncture to smash such a well organised strike was a salutary lesson to that general indiscipline.” This is a history of the dispute: https://libcom.org/history/postal-strike-1922 https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1207183449466803/?type=3

Relief of Female Musicians

Fragment of a relief depicts female musicians, originally from Tell el-Amarna, reused at el-Ashmunein (Hermopolis).

The varied hand positions give an illusion of movement to this troup of female musicians. The second woman from the right is not playing a stringed instrument and it is possible that she is a singer. However, she appears to hold a long slim object in her right hand.

During the Amarna Period the need for speedy erection of new temples for Aten led to the use of smaller, now called Talatat, blocks of stone, which were easier to transport and carve. New Kingdom, Amarna Period, 18th Dynasty, reign of Akhenaten, ca. 1353-1336 BC. Now in the Private Collection.

Yes, this is real (link to tweet). Yes, Tucker Carlson is literally repeating Nazi propaganda that aided the genocide of the Romani during the Holocaust. Yes, I am furious.

(Also, although there is a large population of Romani in Romania, they aren’t indigenous to Romania. They’re a diasporic group originally from northern India.)

Romani and Jewish have been screaming at the top of their lungs for years about neo-fascism in Europe, and Americans were totally aloof.

Then neo-fascism reared its head in America, but Roma and Jews were left out of the conversation in terms of people being impacted, because our oppression was “over.”

Now Tucker Carlson is on live TV using slurs and Nazi propaganda about Romani people, and I’m 90% most people on the left are just going to ignore it.

It’s fucking starting y'all. It’s happening again.

If you’re not Jewish or Roma PLEASE BOOST THIS.

Not-so-friendly reminder for US vultures that collecting parts of endangered species can net you fines of up to $10,500, and unless you have special permits, possessing any parts of birds protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (especially birds of prey) is a felony and common violations can get you fined up to $15,000 with six months imprisonment. Selling parts can get you fines of up to $500,000 and two years imprisonment.

“I didn’t know” or “I think it’s dumb” isn’t going to fly in court when the FWS caught you selling owl feathers on tungler dot com. Obviously these fines are for the more severe cases and if the DNR finds out you have a bluejay feather because you thought it was pretty you’re probably just going to get a slap on the wrist and a “hey kiddo don’t pick those things up” lecture or a small fine. Feds monitor Facebook groups and other sites to make sure that no one has anything illegal, so before you post about how Hot New Find™ make sure it’s actually legal for you to have. Google is free and easy to use. The cops aren’t going to come and shoot you because called the DNR and asked them if something’s legal for you to have. Some people’s lives literally revolve around this community and they rely on taxidermy, skulls, etc to pay their bills and feed their family. They don’t need edgy teenagers on the internet posting about the dead owl they found and decided to stuff in their freezer. Accidents happen and that’s totally okay! Before I got into Vulture Culture I had tons of things that I shouldn’t have had, but I learned about the laws and I got rid of them instead of acting like I was somehow above the law and that I could do whatever I wanted.

Stop making our community look like some sort of shady, illegal trash heap. People look down on collectors enough as it is, we don’t need shady people ruining it for the rest of us.

THIS is SO Important!!

I recently had to send an entire paragraph lecturing someone who contacted me about cleaning a BALD EAGLE carcass and wanting to sell its remains (Talons and feathers) as jewelry in the USA.

//DO NOT DO THIS//

In the end I had to report them to their local DNR after receiving a swift block from the said user in question.
